KUCHING: Police busted two online gambling call centres with the arrest of 11 people, including five Indonesians in Kuching yesterday (July 16).

Kuching police chief ACP Ashmon Bajah said the police raided two apartment units at Jalan Lapangan Terbang, around 11.50am, simultaneously.

"In the first raid (first unit), the police detained six local women, aged between 19 and 25. They were paid a monthly salary of RM1,500 to RM1,700 – some even hold a diploma," he said.

"It is believed that the centre has been in operation for seven months and has generated RM1.68 million from their illicit activities or (equivalent to) RM8,000 profit daily," he said.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Kuching district police headquarters today, Ashmon said the second raid was conducted in another unit in the same apartment building.

He said a total five Indonesians, including two women, were arrested from another unit, believed to have been operating for five months.

"The second call centre is believed to have been raking in daily profit of RM6,000 a day and we estimate they have generated about RM546,000 over the past five months," he said.

The police also confiscated eight mobile phones and six computers in the two raids.

The case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Meanwhile, all the Indonesian suspects, aged between 22 and 36, would also be investigated under Section 15 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for overstaying.
