MIRI: The Wilayah 5 Marine Police team (PPM W5) seized various types of liquor and cigarettes estimated to be worth RM142,440 during an attempted smuggling here, on Sunday night.

Sarawak PPM W5 commander, Assistant Commissioner Shamsol Kasim, said the seizure was made during Ops Landai that was carried out at 7.30pm at Jalan Kiambang, Tudan.

"A team of PPM W5 personnel from Miri were on stakeout for about two hours in the Permyjaya area before tailing a lorry.

"After arriving at a junction on Jalan Kiambang, Tudan, the operations team stopped the lorry and upon inspection found a shipment of various types of liquor and different brands of cigarettes.

"The lorry driver failed to produce any valid documents or papers from the Customs Department," he said in a statement today.

Shamsol said that the goods are suspected of being smuggled in without Customs excise duty which is an offence under the Customs Act of 1967.

According to him, the operations team also detained the 37-year-old local lorry driver.

He added that the seized liquor and cigarettes along with the suspect were handed over to the Miri District Police Headquarters for further action.
