KUALA LUMPUR: The Selayang Magistrate's court today extended the remand of a company director for another day to assist investigations into the odour pollution in Sungai Selangor.

The pollution disrupted piped water supply to several areas in the Klang Valley, last week.

The extension of the remand against the 58-year old man which begins tomorrow was issued by magistrate Nur Hafizah Rajuni today.

The man, who is the director of a chemical supply company was previously remanded for seven days from last Friday (Nov 13) to facilitate a probe into the odour pollution at the raw water source in Sungai Selangor which led to the closure of the Rantau Panjang water treatment plant.

He is being held for investigations under Section 430 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by causing a diminution in the supply of water.

The offence provides for a jail term of between five and 30 years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

On Nov 11, four individuals including two directors of a roadworks construction company, aged between 33 and 43, were remanded in connection with the same incident.

The two company directors were a 40-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man, while the other two, both men, included a Bangladeshi national.

They were all arrested following reports of water pollution.

It was reported that four major water treatment plants (LRAs) in Selangor were forced to shut down due to the pollution incident.

Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) said as a result, 1,139,008 accounts in 1,279 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat were affected by water supply disruptions.

Initial investigations conducted by Air Selangor detected a solvent-like odour emanating from Sungai Selangor.
