IPOH: An unemployed man was charged at the Sessions Court here today with attempting to bribe a traffic police officer last week.

R. Lingeswaren, 37, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before judge S. Indera Nehru.

According to the charge sheet, Lingeswaren attempted to give a RM350 bribe to Sergeant Som Nek Euat as an inducement to not conduct checks on him.

The act was committed at Jalan Tupai, Taiping at 9.20pm on July 13.

For this offence, he was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24 of the same Act.

The offence provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years, and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

MACC prosecuting officer Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin prosecuted, while Lingeswaren was not represented.

Nurul Wahida applied for a court order for Lingeswaren to be sent to the Ulu Kinta Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The court then set Aug 19 for re-mention.
