KANGAR: A former hostel warden was sentenced to 133 years in jail and 42 strokes of the rotan at the Sessions Court, here, today for sodomising and committing sexual assault against five students at a tahfiz centre in Simpang Empat last month.

Nawawi Anuar, 27, pleaded guilty to 26 out of 29 charges read to him in front of judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad.

He was charged with sodomising five students aged between nine and 15 at the Ar-Raudhah tahfiz centre throughout April this year.

However, Nawawi pleaded not guilty to three other charges involving two sodomy cases and one for playing pornographic content on his mobile phone in front of an 11-year-old.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutors Mohd Izham Ali, Norshuhada Mohd Yatim and Mohd Farhan Aliff Ahmad.

The accused was represented by Mohd Hapiz Rajali from the national legal aid foundation (YBGK).

The charges were framed under Section 377B and 377C of the Penal Code as well as Sections 15(e) and 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 along with Section 5(1)(a) of the Film Censorship Act 2002.

The court set July 9 for remention and submission of documents.

A report was lodged on the sexual assault cases by a teacher at the tahfiz centre which then led to police mounting a hunt for the accused.
