ALOR SETAR: A former Kedah assemblyman with the title of 'Datuk' has been remanded for five days beginning today to assist in investigation into the misappropriation of RM30,000 from the Menteri Besar's special fund.

The remand order on the 64-year-old man was issued by Alor Setar court's senior registrar Nor Azah Idris, after allowing an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The order was made under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 that provides a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of gratification or RM10,000 or whichever is higher, upon conviction.

It is learnt that the investigation was carried out with regard to misappropriation of funds meant for the Sadao - Bukit Hitam Cycling Programme in 2017.

NSTP yesterday reported on the Kedah assemblyman's arrest by the MACC.

The suspect was detained at about 4pm yesterday at the Kedah MACC office.

A source said the former assemblyman was believed to have applied to use the fund in February last year to organise a programme, however the money was allegedly not used for that purpose after approval was given.

Meanwhile, Kedah MACC director Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohamad confirmed the arrest when contacted.
