SEREMBAN: Police today arrested a man believed to be involved in the fire which destroyed 154-year-old Then Sze Temple in Temiang here early yesterday morning.

Seremban district police chief Assistant Commissioner Thiew Hock Poh said the 24-year-old suspect was arrested in front of a restaurant at Jalan Temiang here at 12.15pm today.

"Based on the closed-circuit television recording (CCTV) at the temple it showed a man, who ransacked the temple's office and stole money before starting the fire.

"Acting on information, we launched a hunt for the suspect and detained him. Police also seized a money container which we believe belongs to the temple, clothes believed was used by the suspect during the incident, a helmet and a motorcycle," he said in a statement today.

Thiew said the case was being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for treason.

In the 4.53am incident 40 per cent of the temple was destroyed before a team from the Fire and Rescue Department managed to control and put out the fire completely.
