KUALA LUMPUR: A prosecution witness told the High Court today that he had strong basis to link army pathologist Colonel Dr R. Kunaseegaran with the murder of deputy public prosecutor Datuk Anthony Kevin Morais two years ago.
Assistant Superintendent Wan Abdullah Wan Said, who was the main investigation officer for the case, said the victim (Morais) who was a deputy prosecution officer had charged the accused (Dr Kunaseegaran) with multiple graft cases in Shah Alam Sessions Court.
“The accused was afraid that he had to fork out huge amounts of money for all the cases,” he said.
Wan Abdullah was testifying at the trial of five men - R. Dinishwaran, 23; A. Thinesh Kumar, 22; M. Vishwanath, 25; S. Nimalan, 22; and S. Ravichandaran, 45, - who are jointly charged with murdering Morais, 55, between 7am and 8pm on Sept 4, 2015, while Morais was on his way from Jalan Dutamas Raya Sentul to No. 1 Jalan USJ1/6D, Subang Jaya.
They face the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
Dr Kunaseegaran, 54, is charged with abetting in the murder of Morais.
Wan Abdullah said that Ravichandaran and a former accused turned prosecution witness G. Gunasekaran had always accompanied Dr Kunaseegaran to his court proceedings.
“Dr Kunaseegaran always shared and talked about his problems to the duo (Gunasekaran and Ravichandaran) as they were among his good friends.
“Ravichandaran will always try to solve Dr Kunaseegaran’s problems,” Wan Abdullah said.
Gunasekaran was acquitted by the High Court of the murder charge after he pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court to a lesser charge of concealing Morais’ body and disposing the former’s car with the intention of protecting the accused.
He committed the offence between Jalan Dutamas 1, Sentul, and an oil palm plantation in Kampong Sungai Samak, Hutan Melintang in Hilir Perak, between 7am on Sept 4, 2015 and 2am the next day.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Saiful Edris Zainuddin is prosecuting while the accused are represented by counsel M. Manoharan, V. Rajehgopal, and G. Sivakumar.
