SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has arrested 28 people who have violated several offences in waters off Sandakan, in a two-day joint operation here.

District MMEA deputy director of operation commander Mohd Khairul Anuar Abd Majid said those nabbed were among 296 people inspected since Monday.

They have been arrested under Sabah Ports and Harbours Department Enactment and Immigration Act 1959/63.

“Sixteen of them have violated the license terms, two did not have licenses and another one had no adequate safety equipment on his boat.

“Meanwhile, under the Immigration Act, six of them violated passport terms, while two others have no valid documents,” he said in a statement.

The joint-operation with the marine police, Immigration Department, and Sabah Ports and Harbour Department, was held from Sandakan Bay up to Libaran Island, which saw 53 boats inspected.
