KOTA BARU: The van involved in the accident at Km55 of the Kuala Krai-Kota Baru road near Kampung Telekong which killed seven tahfiz students on Friday was driven by a replacement driver.

Acting Kelantan police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Din Ahmad said checks showed that the driver has no valid driving licence but the original driver who was also in the vehicle had one.

“He probably wanted to drive the van and the original driver agreed to it. Police have not completed investigation but we believed speeding is the main cause of the accident.

“We are investigating the case under Section 41 (1) the Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving,” he told reporters yesterday.

Seven students of Maahad Tafiz Al-Hashimi in Kampung Tualang, Kuala Krai died when the van went out control and hit a house. The van was ferrying 12 students and two teachers to a Quran recital programme in Kota Baru.

Five students were killed at the scene while another two died at the Kuala Krai hospital. From the seven injured, four are still undergoing treatment at hospital.
