GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a man who was believed to have been involved in beating a hapless man with blunt objects.

State Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commssioner Zainol Samah said the victim was also rescued by the police.

He said the police had acted on a video footage that went viral. The video showed several unidentified men taking the law into their own hands, punishing the 47-year-old shirtless victim.

The incident took place at a funeral parlour here at Lebuhraya Thean Teik on Friday.

“We mounted the operation and took custody of the injured man at the premises,” said Zainol, who added that the man suffered from multiple bruises to his right eye, lips, nose and hands.

The man has received medical treatment at the Penang Hospital.

“Our initial investigations showed that the man was beaten by several others armed with blunt objects,” he said.

In a press statement today, Zainol added that the incident was linked to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway shooting that killed three and injured another five people last Thursday.

However, he stressed that it is not connected to any triad activities.

Zainol said it had emerged that the man had allegedly insulted the slain Datuk in the shooting incident. The man had claimed the Datuk was a triad member via a posting on social network.

“The man’s written words have caused distress to the Datuk’s family members,” he said.

Zainol said the investigating team will use the video clip as part of its evidence in the investigations under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

He added that the police have identified two other men, currently at large, linked to the beating.

Zainol then emphasised again that the incident did not involve any element of triad feud and urged the public not to distort the video contents.
