GEORGE TOWN: A 19-year-old boy who fell into the sea defied the odds to stay alive by swimming for about one kilometre to return to shore.

Local boy, Aiman Mansur had apparently fallen into the waters while fishing at Pasir Panjang in Pulau Betong, Balik Pulau about 12.40am today.

Aiman was warded at the Balik Pulau Hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

His mother, who declined to be identified, said he was physcially drained and too weak to speak to the press.

She however heaved a sigh of relief and counted her son's close shave as a blessing.

"My son was lucky to survive in the near death situation as he was pulled into the waters by strong undercurrent.

"He was almost drowned but his strong will to stay alive has pushed him to keep swimming for about one kilometer," she said when met at the hospital.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a fisherman found Aiman lying next to the rocks around noon.

He said the department was notified of the incident at 12.49am.
