BUKIT MERTAJAM: Four hikers, including a 7-year-old girl, who went missing at a heavily forested hillside hiking trail yesterday have been found.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the hikers – comprising two women, a teenaged girl and the child – were spotted at a trail checkpoint before midnight.

"Our search and rescue team led them down to the foothills at about 11pm.

"They have been handed over to their respective family members," he said.

Earlier, one of the hikers had sent out a distress call to the rescue authorities after deviating from the trail at about 7pm.

The spokesman said the person who made the call was the only one who carried a mobile phone.

The rescue team, comprising firemen, the Civil Defence Department, forest rangers and volunteers took part in the search.
