GEORGE TOWN: Torrential rain early this morning triggered flash floods across Penang.

Among places affected were Jalan P. Ramlee, Kampung Makam and Kampung Dodol on the island, and Mak Mandin, Taman Bagan, Jalan Raja Uda and Ampang Jajar on the mainland.

Many low-lying areas were inundated. An access road near a highway intersection was temporarily cut off at Sungai Dua and Permatang Pauh, off the North South Expressway (Plus). It has re-opened as of press time.

R. Indirani, 61, who lives on landed property with her siblings near Lintang P Ramlee said rainwater inundated her property at about 2am.

"The floodwaters swept into my house and jolted us from our sleep.

"The water level rose to above our ankles and forced us to move household items on the floor to higher ground," she said.

Another resident, Rahmattullah Abd Majid, 43, in Lintang P.Ramlee, said the water only receded at about 4am after the rain continued for hours.

"My house was flooded with knee-deep waters.

"Fortunately, the rain eased before the situation worsened," he said.
