GEORGE TOWN: A fire has broken out on one of the upper floors of an upscale condominium here this morning, alarming hundreds of residents.

Plumes of thick smoke are seen billowing from a unit on the 35th floor of the highrise in the incident, which began at 6.50am.

No one has been reported injured so far.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman from the Bagan Jermal station said the condominium management corporation made a distress call at about 7am.

"Our initial investigations show that 80 per cent of the unit has been destroyed by the fire.

"No one was in the unit," he said, adding that it took half an hour to bring the fire under control.

As of 10am, firemen are still trying to put out the blaze.

Some 25 firemen from the Bagan Jermal, Jalan Perak and Teluk Bahang stations have been roped in to contain the situation.
