PUTRAJAYA: A lack of patriotism and understanding of the Federal Constitution can lead people into the path of terrorism and support for Islamic State (IS), said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Azalina said the possibility exists, as those involved in such activities (the unpatriotic and ignorant) are seeking external influence to infiltrate the country.

“There should be a strong sense of patriotism, especially among the younger generation who are prone to be influenced by IS and extremism.

“In this matter, Biro Tata Negara (BTN) can play a pivotal role to instil mental endurance against such ideology by improvising their syllabus to meet present day challenges,” she said after attending the BTN monthly assembly here today.

Azalina added that BTN could also act as the country’s defence by promoting patriotism and deeper understanding of the Federal Constitution.

She cited the recent arrest of 14 people by the police, believed to be part of a cell responsible for the Movida nightclub bombing in Puchong. She said the incident was worrying as the men did not appear to be a threat.

Azalina was speaking to reporters after presenting prizes to winners of the BTN ‘Selfie My Patriot 2016’ competition.

The competition, held together with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, was carried out from March 27 to June 4 via Instagram.

Also present was BTN director-general Datuk Haji Ibrahim Saad.
