PUTRAJAYA: Nine Australians were arrested at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for stripping down to only their Jalur Gemilang-themed underwear at the racing circuit yesterday.

Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Aziz Ali said the group members, aged aged between 25 to 29, were arrested at 5pm.

“They will be remanded for four days beginning today. The remand period will be discussed with the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,” he said today.

He said they are being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

Late yesterday, social media was abuzz with images of the men, clad in their Jalur Gemilang-themed bikini briefs.

Opinion appeared split down the middle among netizens, with some seeing it as humorous. Others however viewed it as insulting and disrespectful to local culture.
