KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe they have solved at least three romance scam cases with the arrest of a Nigerian 'Romeo' in Cyberjaya yesterday.
Federal police Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the 29-year-old man is believed to have conned a whopping RM3.6 million from his victims.
He was arrested during an operation at an apartment located in Jalan Teknokrat about 4am.
The operation was conducted following a previous raid on Tuesday, which saw police foil two syndicates with the arrest of eight Africans; six men and two women, and a Malaysian woman.
"During interrogation, the man had admitted to have swindled money out of six women; three from Germany and one each from France, Malta, and Canada.
“Checks also revealed that the syndicate may have scammed two women in Kulaijaya, Johor and Simpang Ampat, Malacca, with the victims’ losses totaling RM15,000,” he said in a statement.
Police, he said, are tracking down other members of the syndicate.
“One of his accomplices has fled to Nigeria. We are in the midst of tracking down other members,” he said.
In the first half of 2016, a total of 1,106 romance scam cases were recorded in Malaysia, involving losses of over RM44 million.
