Bored and in need of some new mobile games to perk you up? Hanna Sheikh Mokhtar recommends these

1. POKEMON GO

The intro message for Pokemon Go reads: “Remember to be alert at all times. Stay aware of your surroundings.” Why? Pokemon Go takes you outside and into an undiscovered world full of wonder. It is a mobile app that you download to your Android smartphone, but play in the real world. By combining GPS and augmented reality elements, this game plants Pokemon in real locations. It’s up to you to get out there and catch them. Players are asked to locate, catch, battle and trade Pokemon, and encouraged to connect with other nearby players. Unfortunately, the game is still unavailable in Malaysia.

* All games can be downloaded from Google Play store.

2. BROTHERS: A TALE OF TWO SONS

In this game, you take control of two young brothers on a quest to cure their dying father by overcoming obstacles and finding the Water of Life. Besides the wonderful visual storytelling and fantastically drawn 3D environments, what’s unique about this game is that the brothers are controlled independently with a thumb on either side of the display. By using their individual strengths to solve puzzles, you can progress through the Nordic-inspired land. The key dynamic is using both brothers simultaneously to solve puzzles and progress in the game. It’s not overly long, but it’s good and has no in-app purchases.

3. CLASH ROYALE

From the makers of Clash of Clans comes Clash Royale. Players battle human opponents in real-time via frantic card-based battles where you must take out the enemy’s Crown Towers while defending your own. This game relies on the social aspect of joining a clan, which helps you to upgrade both your King Level and cards, so you can dominate your opponents in the arena. Although free, Clash Royale falls into the category of mobile games with time-delayed unlocking of chests and an emphasis on in-app purchases. Fortunately, there’s no time restriction for battling.

4. FALLOUT SHELTER

Fallout fans will love Shelter, a mobile game that gives you complete control over your own Vault and the citizens that reside within. In this game, you must build a fallout shelter (in a post-apocalypse world), populate it with people and then manage it well. You have to send dwellers out into the wastelands for supplies and fend off bad guys trying to kill everyone. You can make babies, create entire communities and all kinds of stuff. It has substantial depth and it’s a game you can play for months before you even realise it has in-app purchases.

5. ASPHALT 8: AIRBORNE

This is the successor to Gameloft’s incredibly popular racing game, Asphalt 7: Heat. It carries on the tradition of providing an exciting racing experience on your mobile device with an added twist. The title of the game is a pointer to the biggest change compared to its predecessor. Asphalt 8: Airborne rewards for tricks you perform while in the air, such as Barrel Rolls or Flat Spin jumps. Players can play in various modes including World Series (Multiplayer over the Internet), a local Wi-Fi race, a quick Solo race or the Career mode. The game features excellent graphics though you may need the latest devices to enjoy them to the maximum.
