PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad must accept the democratic will of the people, even if it doesn't align with his personal interests, says Barisan Nasional (Barisan) Strategic Communications Director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

In a statement today, Rahman advised the former prime minister to retire quietly now, rather than‎ be subjected to further humiliation. ‎

“These landslides election results proved again that the prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) is more than capable of leading BN into the next general election.

“And the results also proved Dr Mahathir's claim that Barisan would lose under the prime minister to be another lie. ‎

“Dr Mahathir's Anti-Najib Campaign has failed miserably, and the Opposition is split, incoherent and completely unfit to form a government,” he said today.

He said the people trusted Barisan under the Prime Minister's leadership to deliver economic development and security.‎

Rahman said Dr Mahathir has also been totally rejected by the people as well as the Opposition supporters whom he had shamelessly embraced to topple a democratically elected government.

He said that in doing so, he (Dr Mahathir) had betrayed those in Barisan, who once put their absolute loyalty and trust in him.

“‎It is sad to see him destroy his own legacy. Since these victories for Barisan made the people's rejection of Dr Mahathir clear, he has so far remained silent.

“He is a master of manipulation and twisting logic, but it is hard to see how even he could spin these results.

“These victories are clearly a terminal defeat for him,” he said.
