GEORGE TOWN: A mastermind behind car break-ins at mosques in mainland Penang was caught by police recently, crippling a group who were ‘very successful’ in their endeavours over the past year.

The unemployed 23-year-old man, with the help of four others, would usually strike during the afternoon asar prayers.

Sources close to the case say that the men would sometimes dress up as if they were going for prayers to go undetected.

While the congregation was at prayers, the group would break into cars, stealing valuables such as watches, laptops, cash and sunglasses.

Seberang Prai Utara police chief ACP Azmi Adam said the group is suspected to be behind 33 such break-in cases in Butterworth and Prai.

“We are on the lookout for four other accomplices aged between 20 and 30 who we feel are not far away.

“Those who had their belongings stolen in such a manner, please head over to the district police headquarters in Kepala Batas to redeem them,” he told a press conference here today.
