PUTRAJAYA: The Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Strategic Plan 2016-2020 outlines the direction of Malaysia’s foreign policy leading up to 2020.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, said enhancing Malaysia’s standing as a constructive partner and its capacity to engage effectively on a range of issues would be vital.

“This document outlines the direction and good working culture among the staff of the ministry in fulfilling their responsibilities as an important ministry that carries out foreign policy and international ties,” he said at the launch of the Strategic Plan Guidelines at the ministry today.

The Strategic Plan consisted of six objectives: strengthening bilateral diplomacy, strengthening multilateral diplomacy, strengthening Asean, providing effective and efficient service to the ministry’s stakeholders and clients, promoting Malaysia and disseminating information through public diplomacy and strengthening the institution, and improving human capital.

Anifah said the ministry’s work programme for the next five years was aligned to the 11th Malaysia Plan, and was driven by the ministry’s Transformation Programme

The Strategic Plan Guidelines were first published in 2009, and 2016 revised version was the ministry’s third publication.

Anifah said the plan would guide the ministry in promoting, projecting and protecting Malaysia’s overseas interests, and for Malaysia to contribute towards achieving global peace, security and prosperity.

He said the ministry’s officers must be open to cooperation and provide advice to those who are in need, to protect the country’s sovereignty and image.

“Although the ministry has achieved many successes, we must always be prepared and work hard to uphold and defend the interests of our country,” he added.
