KUALA LUMPUR : The government will continue to ensure the Indian community in Malaysia will not be left behind from the national development, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The prime minister, in a message in conjunction with Deepavali tomorrow, said the government would help the community elevate their structure, culture and economy.

He said this commitment had been manifested through numerous initiatives that had been undertaken over the years.

This commitment, he said, could also be seen in the 2016 Budget and the 11th Malaysia Plan that will act as a master plan for the direction of the socio-economic development of the Indian community.

“As we celebrate the festival of lights that carries the meaning of the triumph of light over darkness and good defeating tyranny, let us not forget to light up the lives of those around us who need assistance. Use this opportunity to multiply our efforts in order to give a better hope for the community,” he said.

Najib added that Malaysians were fortunate to be able to practice traditions which have been handed down through the generations.

“The good food that will be served and the beautiful houses that will be lit with lights and joy is something that can be seen when we visit our Hindu friends’ open houses.

“I am confident this festival will be celebrated with solidarity because such celebrations will foster stronger ties and harmony among all ethnic groups in Malaysia.

“Lastly, I once again want to take this opportunity to wish a Happy Deepavali or ‘Deepavali Vaalthukal’ to all Malaysian Hindus in the hope that this celebration of light will illuminate the lives of all Malaysians to live in peace and harmony,” he added.
