MUSIC enthusiasts can look forward to a Western Classical Music Concert this Sunday by the PJ Philharmonic Orchestra (PJPO).

The Classical Splendour concert will showcase the masterpieces of three famous composers, namely Mozart’s Overture To The Opera Don Giovanni K 52, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 In C Minor Op. 37, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 101 In D Major.

This concert has Loo Bang Hean as the soloist for the Beethoven Piano Concerto and it is conducted by Lam Siu Chong, PJPO’s founder.

The PJPO was formerly known as the PJ Youth Chamber Orchestra (PJYCO). It was formed in 1983 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for classical music.

Each contributed his or her musical skills with his or her own instruments and today the orchestra has matured and grown to more than 90 members.

PJPO is the brainchild of Lam, who is the principal of the L&J Conservatory Of Music. The orchestra was established with the objective of widening the musical knowledge of youths in Petaling Jaya, upholding the standards of stage performances and personal development for classical music enthusiasts in the city.

Lam believes that when a person plays a single musical instrument, his or her scope of music, interpretation and appreciation may be very good but is limited to oneself and therefore, narrow.

However when musically talented people who share a love of classical music gather to produce orchestral music, musical excellence will be enhanced.

Many challenging repertoires can only be achieved by a group of people with the same musical interest.

PJPO is run by volunteers, who are the musicians themselves. They commit their time and energy to running weekly activities and annual concerts.

It holds rehearsals weekly in Taman Tan Yew Lai, near Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur. Membership is open to musicians from all walks of life, regardless of age, region and musical knowledge.

Classical Splendour is at 7.30pm at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre in Jalan Yong Shook Lin. Entry is by donation.
