JOHOR BARU: A trailer carrying plastic compounds was destroyed in a fire at Kilometre 3.4 of the North-South Expressway this afternoon.

No one was injured during the 12.40pm incident as the lorry driver and his attendant managed to flee the scene.

However, the incident caused a minor congestion on the north-bound part of the highway.

A Johor Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said six firemen from the Tebrau station were rushed to the scene following a distress call at 12.50pm.

"Upon arrival, the entire tanker and its contents were engulfed in flames. We are still investigating the cause of the fire and the estimated loss," he said.

In another incident earlier today, a hazardous material (Hazmat) team from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue station was sent to Jalan Sungai Tiram following a chemical spill due to an accident.

"We received a call about 9.30am. Upon arrival at 9.55, the team contained the area affected as about 2,000 litres of nickel sulfide had spilled onto the road," the spokesman said.
