TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) is positive on the country’s first Islamic-on-Demand channel called AlHijrah-on-Demand and believes it will become a hit with its subscribers during the Ramadan month, thus boosting its IPTV service HyppTV.

AlHijrah-on-Demand streams Islamic content in high-definition digital format on HyppTV’s commercial-free channel 834.

Additionally, HyppTV subscribers can download the HyppTV Everywhere app for Apple and Android operating systems to watch the channel.

To be able to view these on-demand programmes on two devices (smartphones/ tablets), the rate is RM5 per month, while it is RM10 per month for five devices.

There is a huge demand for high-quality Islamic programmes, TM chairman Datuk Seri Halim Shafie said at the launch of AlHijrah-on-Demand yesterday.

AlHijrah Media Corp chairman Tan Sri Mohd Yusof Noor said the modern-day Muslim community is also increasingly looking for answers (for example, in quarrels between spouses, disagreements among siblings and friends, etc) from Islamic television programmes and AlHijrah fits their current lifestyle requirements.

Yusof added that under the current situation where Islam is misinterpreted by a lot of people, AlHijrah is in a position to set the record straight.

The contents, said Halim, which are all locally produced, will include talk shows, documentaries as well as cooking shows in both Bahasa Malaysia and English.

HyppTV, which is powered by TM’s two high-speed broadband services Unifi and Streamyx, has over 700,000 subscribers and 119 channels — comprising 50 premium channels, 29 free channels, 18 video-on-demand channels and 22 interactive channels.
