TENOM: Businesses, especially in the tourism sector, have been affected by the nearly week-long power failure here.

The disruption occurred last Tuesday morning, when two Transmission Main Intake substations in Kampung Bahagia here caught fire.

Residents in the district have had to rely on mobile generator sets for operations that have to be limited to a certain period of time.

Katirina Podon, from Kota Kinabalu, said upon checking in at a hotel here on Saturday, she was informed by the receptionist that there would be power rationing from midnight to morning, as well as during lunch hours.

"My family can't stay in such conditions as it is not convenient, especially when I have a 10-month-old baby with me.

"Although we were tired from travelling for hours to come to Tenom, there was no choice, but to drive another hour to Keningau district."

A Tenom Agricultural Park tour guide, who did not want to be named, said because of the power failure, the park management had to reject requests by those who wanted to stay at its hostels and chalets.

"Accommodation here is usually fully occupied during weekends.

"However, this (last) week, fewer visitors came to the park," said the guide, who has worked at the park for 15 years.

Fast-food outlet worker Khatijah Helmi said the eatery had been operating under dim and stuffy conditions.

"Even the workers find it is uncomfortable to be here, so we are not surprised that customers choose not to eat here."
