IT was a heart-warming and gratifying experience for more than 150 Sunway employees who volunteered for the Stop Hunger Now programme recently.

They gathered at Sunway Hotel George Town, here, to prepare 20,000 packages of nutritious meals which were distributed to various beneficiaries in the state.

Each package, adequate for six servings, contained rice, soy, vegetables, flavouring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals.

The packing was completed in two hours with the volunteers working on two 50-minute shifts.

Among the beneficiaries was Sekolah Sinar Harapan in Permatang Rawa, which provides basic education, living skills and welfare to mentally disabled children.

Its principal Abdul Halim Osman gave the thumbs up for the programme which he described as a Sunway Group success.

““Children need nutritious meals. The organisation has done a great job by providing such meals to the underprivileged,”” he said.

Other beneficiaries included House of Hope, which helps poor children in their education expenses, and Koperasi Bodhi Heart Bhd which provides food aid to poor families.

Hotel executive assistant manager P. Nagaswaran said the programme was conducted under Sunway Group’s Community Aid, Reach-Out and Enrichment project.

“It is a platform to advocate leadership outside the confines of the workspace for our employees, while embracing Sunway’’s core values of integrity, humility and excellence to support the communities.

“Through these acts of kindness, we learn to be humble and caring towards others and the environment,”” he said at a press conference.

The exercise was a joint effort with the United States-based Stop Hunger Now organisation to combat hunger.

“Stop Hunger Now has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger and provide life-saving assistance around the world since it was launched in 1998.

“The global humanitarian aid resonates with Sunway’’s initiatives of building and enriching the lives through aid and engagement,” Nagaswaran said.
