SHAH ALAM: Selangor state speaker Hannah Yeoh urged Barisan Nasional to appoint a new opposition leader after the resignation of Sungai Burong assemblyman Datuk Shamsuddin Lias, this morning.

Hannah said that BN assemblymen must remember that they were paid salary to serve the people and are answerable to them and should not make personal decisions when it comes to the state assembly.

“I accept Shamsuddin's resignation and want to take this opportunity to thank him for all his contributions to the state assembly.

“I was informed that this is a personal decision and I accept it. But the assembly needs an opposition leader and BN assemblymen must realise that they are paid to do work for the people and must answer to them,” she said after holding a press conference at her office in the state Annexe building, this afternoon.

Hannah added that the amendment made on Dec 4 to the standing order, that would make it obligatory for the opposition leader to sit as a chairman for the Public's Account Council (PAC) would not change.

“Selangor will be the only state where the PAC chairman will be from the opposition but this is the practice of other developed nations such as United Kingdom, India and New Zealand.

“We want to be the first that will lead the way towards better governance and I think the opposition leader should embrace this change so he can be the prime mover of check and balance in the state,” she said

Shamsuddin earlier tendered his resignation and returned the official car given to him by the state as the opposition leader.

He cited the ‘imbalance’ composition of opposition and government assemblymen in the PAC as well as grouses with the Menteri Besar Azmin Ali as the reasons for his departure.
