GEORGE TOWN: A Rapid Penang bus driver who was stabbed in his thigh by a female passenger early this month has been recovering well.

Rapid Penang head of Communication Department Rafidah Abdul Karim said the bus driver’s condition had improved.

“He has been transferred out from the intensive care unit to the normal ward,” she told New Straits Times in a short messaging service reply today.

Aisyamudin Yaacob, 27, was stabbed by a vegetable farmer Chong Lan Keow, 49, in Jalan Paya Terubong, Relau about 5.45am on Oct 6.

It was believed that the woman attacked Aisyamudin after the driver refused to heed her request to pull over at a non-designated stop in Paya Terubong.

Chong was detained by the police at her house on Oct 7. A 8.5cm-long knife, believed to have been used in the stabbing, was recovered from her.

She was charged in the magistrate’s court on Oct 10 with causing hurt.

Chong’s counsel, Norliza Mohd Ali, told the court she was made to understand the accused was suffering from a mental illness but noted there was no documentation as she had never been referred to a hospital.
