KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have outlined several standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure that the quality of 1Malaysia notebook being distributed to the targetted group is guaranteed.

Deputy Education Minister P.Kamalanathan said the SOP being set up comprised matters that needed to be adhered to, including maintenance aspect before and after the 1Malaysia Netbook was distributed.

"Among the steps being implemented are that all netbooks supplied have the Sirim label, implementing quality inspection through five netbook samples for every transmission received and ensuring netbooks that are supplied fulfill the condition specification set," he told the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.

He was replying to a question raised by Mohamad Imran Abdul Hamid (PKR-Lumut) on the quality of 1Malysia Netbooks that were said to break down frequently and could not be repaired.

Kamalanathan said quality inspection that was being conducted also involved meeting its specifications, operation of hardware and software.

“Netbooks supplied are given a one-year guaranty and if there are some defects, the recipient can send it to the service centre that have been appointed by the supplier and repairs are free of charge," he said.

On causes of the netbook defects, he said, it could be due to the way it was being used and netbook component defects.

One of the steps being taken to address the problem was to ensure the supplier had adequate spare parts, made replacement if factory defects were detected during the distribution, he said.

"We also provide guidelines to recipients on smart netbook usage such as ensuring antivirus on the operating software when updating and deleting files," he added. -- BERNAMA
