SIBU: Sarawak Police are constantly monitoring for possible militant activities in the state, according to Sarawak Police Commissioner SDCP Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman.

He said police were also monitoring visitor entry into the state.

"To date, police have not found any militant movement in the state," he said when met by reporters after breaking fast at Surau Darul Huda at the district police headquarters here last night.

Meanwhile, he said the smuggling of air rifles into Sarawak from the neighbouring countries was under control.

"What is worrying is the existence of homemade guns owned by local residents, usually used for hunting.

“Most of the weapons seized in the 'Ops Cantas' in Sarawak were homemade, not contraband, and that worries us," he said.

Sabtu urged owners of homemade guns to surrender them to the nearest police station without delay, failing which, they could be prosecuted under the Firearms Act.--BERNAMA
