KUALA LUMPUR: The sale of external residual-current circuit breakers (RCCBs) with a current sensitivity of 10 milliampere (mA) has increased by 50 per cent since last September.
Electrical and Electronics Association of Malaysia (Teeam) president Chew Shee Fuee said about 20,000 units of the 10mA RCCB were sold since September.
He said in 2010, 5,000 units were sold, 2011 (6,000 units), 2012 (8,000 units) and 15,000 units last year.
Chew said electrical consultants had specified for the device to be installed at all new housing development to prevent short circuit or electrocution. It was only when the issue was highlighted in the media that many consumers rushed to buy the RCCB.
Chew said Teeam would be organising a national campaign on "self-test your circuit breaker" to create public awareness on domestic electrical safety and promote self-testing of RCCB at home. He said the launch would be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Tuesday at 3pm.
He advised consumers to test the built-in RCCB at least four times a year to prevent electrocution.
"The tripping test can easily be done by pressing a button marked 'Test' on the RCCB. It should be replaced if it fails to trip," he said.
