KUALA LUMPUR: The reappointment of pensioners in the civil service and statutory bodies does not affect promotion in the public sector as they are retained based on their expertise, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said so far only 36 pensioners were reappointed on contract basis in various ministries, departments and statutory bodies while 704 lecturers and 232 officers were retained by universities.

"As the 36 pensioners are in Jusa C (Premier Grade) and hold senior positions, their reemployment does not affect the promotion of junior staff," he said when replying to a question from Dr Che Rosli Che Mat (PAS-Hulu Langat).

Shahidan said the pensioners’ reappointment benefited the civil service as they could impart their expertise and knowledge to junior officers.

He said they were not reappointed arbitrarily but based on requirements and qualifications, apart from experience, outstanding performance and good health. -- BERNAMA
