"His wife ran to the room and the gunmen took the victim to their boat. There could be others (suspects) waiting on the boat," he said in a press conference at the state police headquarters here.

Omar said the gunmen spoke in Malay language‎, adding a worker identified as Mazlan, in his 20as, was also missing.

He said the fish farm has been in operation since April this year and that there‎ were three co-owners and three workers.

One of Chan's partners who was also at the centre during the incident lodged a police report‎.

"We are now looking into the background of the three workers.

"We believe the kidnappers have crossed over to the southern Philippines," he said, adding the suspect came in a small boat to avoid detection.
