GEORGE TOWN: The tenure of Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas as Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri has been extended for another two years.

Deputy Chief Minister (I) Datuk Rashid Mohd Hasnon said an official announcement on the matter would be made soon.

"At present, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri is resting at the Institut Jantung Negara since last week," he told reporters when attending a tea reception organised by the Tun Sardon Jubir Foundation, held in conjunction with Abdul Rahman's 76th birthday celebrations here today.

Abdul Rahman was appointed Penang Yang Di-Pertua Negeri by the King in May 2001 and has since been reappointed three times, in 2005, 2009 and 2011.

At the event, 36 local charitable organisations received RM1,000 from the foundation. The included Women Centre for Change (WCC), Mount Miriam Hospital and Asia Community Service.
