JOHOR BARU: About 50 Year Five and Six pupils and 10 English language teachers of SK Temenggong Abdul Rahman 2 took part in a New Straits Times Newspaper-In-Education (NST-NIE) workshop here today.

The half day workshop which started at 8am and ended at 12.30pm was organised by the school's English Language Panel.

English lecturer and NST-NIE specialist Vincent D'Silva facilitated the workshop.

SK Temenggong Abdul Rahman 2 headmaster Mohd Yusof Hamat and Amril Muktar were present during the workshop.

The participants were given activities to do employing the use of the NST newspaper.

D'Silva kicked off the workshop by explaining the various sections of the New Straits Times to the participants. This included newspaper terminology and the nuances associated with print media.

Among the activities were where the pupils used the newspaper for activities that saw them scan, cut and glue paper clippings.

The pupils and teachers also joined in to match newspaper headlines with stories and also searching for pictures to match the different stories.

A pupil Elyas Sahril, 12, said he enjoyed the workshop as it offered tips for his English language classes.

His classmate, Muhd Azlan Zikri, 12, said it was a good opportunity to make new friends as they work in teams.

Another pupil, Nabil Ikhwan Mohd Hazril said the workshop made learning English fun for him.

Amril, who has been a teacher for the past 34 years, said the workshop was a valuable experience for both pupils and teachers.

“The NIE methods employed by D’Silva are positive and very useful for the pupil's English language examinations,” he said.
