IT is disgusting to hear that a Nepalese worker was assaulted by a shopper in a restaurant at the Tropicana Shopping Mall in Petaling Jaya recently, in full view of other customers and auxiliary policemen.

The police must take a serious view of the incident and bring the culprit to book.

Foreign workers, irrespective of the country of their origin, are here to earn an honest living. They are brought here legally to be employed in private sectors that face acute manpower shortage. The country needs them. They contribute in no small measure to our economic growth.

Besides providing basic amenities, the employers must ensure their safety at work sites. Malaysians must respect and accord them the dignity and protection which every human being deserves.

If appropriate, the victim must be compensated for the pain and humiliation he suffered in public.
