JOHOR BARU: The state chapter of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) said the industry here will face a manpower shortage if the government abolishes the 10 per cent service charge.

Its state chairman Shyam Nair said Johor's hotel industry manpower is unique as it is already affected by the Singapore pull factor.

"The hotel industry here is already facing manpower issues due to many staff working in Singapore hotels.

"With the abolishment of the 10 per cent service charge, this will worsen the situation in the state," he said after a state MAH meeting at the Grand Blue Wave Hotel here today.

Also present were Johor MAH honorary vice-chairman Shahrir Naelis Amir and the chapter's committee members.

The move will affect about 7,000 out of 15,000 hotel industry staff in the state who have supervisory roles and below.

It is learnt that most hotel staff rely on the 10 per cent service charge to supplement their monthly incomes.
