KOTA TINGGI: The southern region marine police detained 62 illegal immigrants in three separate raids in the district here today.

A Region 2 marine police task force from Pengerang here detained a total of 42 men, including a skipper, and 20 women during the series of raids under Ops Landai.

Those detained, aged between 22 and 45, consisted of Indonesian illegal immigrants who entered and also leave Malaysian waters without valid documents.

Police started the raids from 4.45am at Pantai Mados here and it continued to Pantai Tanjung Kelisa and later at Pantai Ladang Mados at 6am.

It is learnt that the raids were based on information from an earlier arrest of a 33-year-old skipper (tekong darat) who manages a syndicate to bring-in and also bring-out Indonesian illegal immigrants into the country.

Police will initiate investigations for those detained under the Anti-Trafficking in Person And Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) 2007 and also the Immigration Act 1959/1963.
