KUANTAN: The Human Resources Ministry will ensure that the next of kin of the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crew members get the compensation they deserve, especially from the Social Security Organisation (Socso), said deputy minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib.

Ismail said the agency involved had been asked to study the relevant legislations and find ways to expedite the process to assist those involved, as the crew members were killed on duty.

“Unlike the MH370 incident, the MH17 was confirmed to have crashed, killing all its crew members. They deserve the compensation as stipulated by law,” he said after attending an occupational safety and health programme and breaking fast with workers at Asturi Metal Builders (M) Sdn Bhd in Gebeng on Friday night.

Present were Socso chief executive officer Datuk K. Selvarajah
and Asturi Metal Builders managing director Datuk Md Sharif Shamsuddin.

Ismail said the ministry would obtain verified information on the crew members and the tragedy before Human Resources Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem could make an official announcement about the compensation.

On another matter, Ismail said the ministry would assist trade unions whose members were exposed to high risks on the job to get better protection and insurance coverage from their employers. However, he said their requests should be reasonable and fair.

Ismail, who is also the National Occupational Safety and Health Council chairman, said the government would always ensure the good relations between employers and trade unions were maintained.

He said good cooperation and higher awareness among employers and workers had helped reduce the number of workplace accidents.
