THERE are those who take a lifetime to find their calling in life, and then there are those who just know what they are destined for.

Nazim Azman found the thrill for technique and speed early in life. It was through this realisation that he was determined to turn his youth's passion into a profession come adulthood.

Beginning with kart racing at an early age, the 22-year-old Malaysian race driver gives Cars Bikes and Trucks an insight into his life's journey, from going pro to representing the Sime Darby Racing Team (SDRT) at the 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia (PCCA).

Q: What drew you into racing? How did it begin?

A: Racing has always been a part of me, right from childhood. I grew up watching my father who used to be a race driver, and that's where the spark started. I was drawn to the exhilaration of speed and the thrill of competition.

My first taste of racing came when I attended a local karting event and I was instantly hooked. The speed and roar of engines on the racetrack ignited a passion that would shape my life's journey.

From that moment, I knew that racing was more than just a hobby; it was something I wanted to pursue professionally. I joined competitions that finally led me to this opportunity to steer for SDRT in the 2023 PCCA.

Q: How did you get started on going professional?

A: My journey towards becoming a professional racer was a gradual progression fuelled by unwavering dedication and the pursuit of opportunities.

I started in karting, honing my skills and gaining essential racing experience. As I progressed, I achieved significant milestones like winning the Rotax Max Challenge Malaysia in the MicroMax category and securing third place in the Rotax Max Challenge Asia.

These achievements opened doors to the world of single-seater racing, where I competed in the highly competitive FIA Formula 3 championships on the international stage.

The partnership with SDRT and my participation in the PCCA marked a pivotal phase in my journey towards becoming a professional racer.

Q: Give us a rundown of your professional or racing experience prior to joining the PCCA.

A: Before joining the PCCA, I had the privilege of racing in various categories, each contributing to my growth as a racer.

Transitioning to single-seater racing, I competed in FIA Formula 3 championships globally, gaining invaluable experience on some of the world's most prestigious tracks.

These experiences shaped my abilities and prepared me for the challenges of professional racing.

Q: How has your race experience been so far since you joined SDRT to take part in the PCCA?

A: Joining the SDRT and participating in the PCCA have been an incredible journey. It's been filled with intense competition, learning experiences and personal growth.

The PCCA offers a unique platform for aspiring racers, further emphasising my development through the PCCA Talent Pool Programme.

Representing SDRT has been a privilege, and I've had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business. Every race in the PCCA is a thrilling challenge, and I'm continuously working to improve my skills and achieve success for my team.

Being the first Malaysian contender in the PRO category, I'm racing against formidable opponents, many of whom have extensive experience in GT racing. The competition is intense, and each race presents new challenges. I'm honoured and humbled at every race to be a part of it.

Q: What made you decide to join up with the team, and also to participate in the PCCA?

A: It all started with a dream to pursue GT racing, as I was looking out for racing opportunities to broaden my horizon. The timing and opportunity were just right to enter the world of Porsche motorsport, as Sime Darby Auto Performance plans to join PCCA this season.

It's a unique opportunity that aligns perfectly with my aspirations as a professional racer. The decision was driven by the shared vision and commitment of SDRT, Porsche Malaysia, and myself to nurture local racing talent and elevate motorsports in Malaysia.

The PCCA Talent Pool Programme, coupled with the support and resources provided by SDRT, offered a clear pathway for me to compete at an international level. It's a chance to represent Malaysia on the global stage and continue the legacy of motorsport excellence.

Q: How different is it from other racing competitions?

A: The PCCA sets itself apart in several ways. It's a one-make race series, which means that all drivers compete in identical Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, emphasising driver skill and strategy. What truly distinguishes the PCCA is its commitment to developing young talents through the PCCA Talent Pool Programme, offering coaching, training, and mentorship to drivers. The competition is intense, with skilled racers from across Asia, making each race a thrilling challenge.

It's not just about racing; it's about holistic development as a professional driver, setting it apart from many other racing competitions.

Q: Share with us some of your personal highlights and unexpected challenges you've faced during the races so far. What do you like/hate most so far?

A: Racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia has been a rollercoaster of highs and challenges.

One personal highlights is the podium finish in Sepang International Circuit Malaysia, in front of friends and family as well as local fans who have supported me throughout my journey in the PCCA. There's something about placing at home ground that just feels so good.

There is also the satisfaction of overcoming challenging race conditions, and the camaraderie among fellow racers.

However, unexpected challenges like rapidly changing weather conditions and adapting to different tracks have tested my adaptability and skills. What I love most is the sense of achievement that comes with each race, and the continuous learning experience.

As for dislikes, I wouldn't say there's anything to hate. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow and improve as a racer.

Q: Give us the scoop; what are your pre-race rituals to help you get your mind into the zone? Any luck preparation or specific music to help soothe the nerves?

A: Pre-race rituals are crucial to getting in the right mindset. I have a set routine that includes physical warm-ups, mental preparation, and visualisation of the upcoming race.

Q: Are there any areas you think you need to work on?

A: Acknowledging areas for improvement is essential in motorsport. While I've made significant progress, there are areas I continue to work on.

Consistency in performance is paramount and I'm constantly fine-tuning my driving techniques to achieve it.

Adapting quickly to varying track conditions and refining my race craft are also areas of focus. I'm also committed to enhancing my physical fitness and mental resilience, as these are crucial for success in racing.

Q: What are you looking forward to now that you've got a few races under your belt in the PCCA?

A: With each race, I'm looking forward to raising my performance to new heights. It's an ongoing journey of self-improvement. Having gained experience in the PCCA, I aim to consistently compete at the highest level.

While my commitment and passion for racing remain unchanged since my first race, the knowledge and experience I've gained have allowed me to become a more skilled and confident racer.

Q: Speaking of cars, how are you finding your 911 GT3?

A: The Porsche 911 GT3 is an exceptional racing machine. It's a true driver's car, offering a perfect balance of power, precision, and handling.

The 911 GT3's performance is exhilarating and it responds precisely to my commands on the track. Its iconic design and engineering excellence make it a privilege to race in.

Personally, the batik-inspired 911 GT3 Cup car steered by SDRT is also my partner and buddy on the racetrack. There's a certain pride and sense of belonging in driving the Porsche 911 GT3 donned with a local twist.

It's a car that demands respect and rewards skill, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Q: What other cars do you wish to race in? Any specific competition or races you would like to participate in if you haven't already?

A: While the Porsche 911 GT3 is a dream to race, there are other iconic cars and competitions I aspire to be a part of.

Le Mans, the legendary 24-hour race with its rich history is certainly on my list. The idea of racing at the N¸rburgring Nordschleife, known as the "Green Hell", is also a thrilling prospect.

Competing in endurance racing events like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring would be incredible experiences. These are the dreams that keep me motivated and hungry for new challenges.

Q: Give us a list of your favourite cars outside the track. A top five or 10 vehicles you really want or must have in your personal garage and why, if you could tell us.

A: Outside the track, I have a deep appreciation for a variety of cars. Porsche sports cars are my favourite, especially the Porsche 911 (992-generation), as the handling is great. Apart from two-door sports car, I also enjoy sport utility vehicles like the Audi RSQ8 and Ferrari Purosangue.

But of course, if it's a must have, I'd choose a fleet of Porsche sports cars to be in my garage.

Q: As a former FIA Formula 3 race driver and with your current venture into the PCCA Pro, what advice can you give to anyone who aspires to go professional?

A: Pursuing a professional racing career is a challenging but rewarding journey.

To the aspiring drivers, begin karting or racing at a young age to build essential skills and experience. Finding experienced mentors who can guide your development and hon your skillset is also essential.

This is not a sport you can do on your own; it takes a village. Joining programmes like the PCCA Talent Pool offered me valuable training and support.

Racing demands peak physical fitness, so maintain a rigorous training regimen and develop mental resilience to handle the pressures of competition.

Build relationships within the racing community, attend events, and actively seek opportunities to showcase your talent. Motorsport is ever evolving, so commit to continuous learning and improvement from your surroundings and the people you meet.

The path to becoming a professional racer is challenging, but with determination and the right opportunities, it's an achievable goal.
