WHAT happens when you marry a streetbike with a dirtbike? The matrimony may produce what is called a street scrambler.

Far from being an unusable mongrel, a street scrambler may just be the perfect offspring to satisfy any riders' demands, with the state of today's decaying urban landscape.

Okay, that may be taking it a bit too Mad Max but what Royal Enfield has launched needs to be considered more seriously than usual.

The new Scram 411 is billed as a multi-purpose (as opposed to dual-purpose) adventure motorcycle. Built on Royal Enfield's proven LS-410 engine platform and the Harris Performance chassis, the Scram 411 claims to combine spirited agility on urban streets with competent off-road capabilities.

The LS-410 powerplant is a 411cc, fuel-injected, four-stroke, SOHC, air-cooled single-cylinder engine with a maximum power of 24.3bhp at 6,500rpm and max torque of 32Nm at 4000rpm to 4500 rpm.

The bike looks easy enough to manage over urban commutes and the easy-going engine performance would allow even a newbie to tackle bad roads and off-road obstacles easily.

"Scram 411 is a brand-new model designed for multi-purpose rides for off-road and urban city riding suitable for all riding adventures.

"Combining the authentic vibes of a scrambler and adventure bike genetics, the Scram 411 will bring riding enthusiasts' experiences to a new level. We have no doubt this model will do well in Malaysia and be much loved by local riders," said Didi Group chairman Rewi Hamid Bugo.

Long travel suspension and generous ground clearance are prerequisites for a street scrambler. The Scram 411's 41mm telescopic front suspension provides 190mm travel and the rear monoshock has 180mm travel.

Ground clearance is a class-leading 200mm. The front and the rear discs are equipped with a dual-channel anti-lock braking system.

The wheel sizes are the ideal compromise between off-road capability and on-road traction, being a 19-inch and 17-inch combination, fitted with dual purpose tyres.

The seat on the new Scram 411 has been reimagined for greater comfort over long saddle time. The 795mm seat height and well thought-out ergonomics should make the Scram 411 accessible to a wide variety of riders and genders.

Its Asia Pacific markets business head, Anuj Dua, said: "Scram 411 can navigate a wide spectrum of terrains and challenges. Most scrambler motorcycles focus only on aesthetics and looks.

"We were determined to create a motorcycle that would be distinct in design and purpose and bring the best of rough road capability to urban riding when we began work on the Scram 411.

"With its distinctive look and design, playful colourways, and accessible riding proposition, the Scram 411 is an ultimate urban scrambler. In the Asia-Pacific region, adventure riding is one of the fastest-growing segments and we truly believe that our motorcycle will be a great multi-purpose companion on the road.

"In Malaysia, there is a huge potential for agile, urban motorcycles that make the mean streets feel a whole lot friendlier and Scram 411 will be the perfect option for it. This is a very exciting and spirited new motorcycle and we are confident that riders from across the world will love the new Scram 411, said Dua."

The new Scram 411 is available in seven colourways across three variants. Designed to stand out, the colourways reflect a distinct urban vibe, with dark shades combined with highlights to pop and break the monotony.

The Scram 411 in Graphite Yellow, Graphite Red and Graphite Blue colour options come with grey tanks and distinct tank badges and matching tyre rim tapes.

The Skyline Blue and Blazing Black versions have distinct colour tanks with the identifiable Royal Enfield stripes and matching mud guards.

The top-end variant, in the two colourways of White Flame and Silver Spirit, flaunts dual tank colours with unique and fun graphics.

An array of accessories complements the Scram 411's lifestyle and purpose. Designed, developed and homologated alongside the motorcycle, the accessories are for protection, style and comfort, and come with a comprehensive three-year warranty.

The apparel and riding gear range are also comprehensive. Jerseys equipped with Eva protection foam as well as T-shirts and jackets in vibrant colours and checkered graphics are available.

The premium variant Scram 411 is priced at RM27,400, the mid variant at RM27,100 and the base variant at RM26,900.
