KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's 90 per cent return rate for LED wristbands used by audiences at British rock band Coldplay's concert last year easily beat neighbouring Thailand and the Philippines.

This means it can hardly be considered the lowest return rate for a Southeast Asian country as previously reported.

Thailand recorded a return rate of 89 per cent while the Philippines' rate was 87 per cent, reported entertainment portal Lifestyle Asia recently.

LED wristbands are a major highlight of the British band's concerts and are made from compostable, plant-based materials, designed to be reused show after show.

This has allowed Coldplay to reduce their wristband production by 80 per cent through collecting, sterilising, and recharging them after every show.

The average Coldplay wristband return rate is 86 per cent during the first year of their Music Of The Spheres tour.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore has the highest return rate at 91 per cent which is 6 per cent behind Japan which has a rate of 97 per cent, the highest in East Asia.

Malaysia came right after Singapore, as Coldplay's KL concert last Nov 22 scored 90 per cent.

Bangkok's concert last weekend saw a return rate of 89 per cent while Manila's Jan 19 concert had an 87 per cent return rate.

The Coldplay bracelets, also called Xylobands, are given to audiences to wear throughout the concert.

They light up as part of an immersive light show while the songs are being performed.

According to some sources the free wristbands cost Coldplay GBP 400,000 (RM2.4 million) a night.

Inside the thick outer material, there are LED lights.

Within a plastic case on the Xyloband, there is a radio receiver which can receive wireless signals from a central controller.

This allows the light show to happen inside the concert hall. Once outside the hall, and far away from the receiver, the Coldplay bracelet will not work.
