KUALA LUMPUR: Popular singer-actress Erra Fazira has advised parents to "reduce their egos" and emphasise their children's happiness.

Erra said in a news report yesterday that divorced parents should avoid getting into child custody battles for the sake of their children.

Citing her own example, she said that she and her former husband, Engku Emran Engku Zainal Abidin, both learnt to "give and take" when it came to raising their daughter Engku Aleesya.

"Child custody is indeed tricky, but I would like to advise all divorced parents to practice compromise. The last thing that we want is to see our children grow up unhappy or angry," she said.

Erra revealed that she was raised by a single mother, and wanted Engku Aleesya, 15, to spend quality time with both of her parents.

She also cautioned former spouses about "airing dirty linen in public" for this would also affect their children's well-being.

"Good parents should keep all their differences behind closed doors. It does not augur well for their children," she said.

Erra was married to Engku Emran from 2007 until their divorce in 2014. She was previously married to Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim of KRU from 2003 to 2006.
