KUALA LUMPUR: Tear-jerker family drama Abang Adik has successfully raked in RM5.2 million at the local box office in 24 days.

Its director Jin Ong said that the collection, which was announced last Saturday marked a "fantastic start" to the new year.

Ong said in an Instagram post yesterday that the RM3.8 million Abang Adik had also become the first Malaysian film to break Taiwan's box office records by collecting RM13.5 million (NT$90 million) to date.

"Thank you so much, viewers for your support and feedback, as well as your social media campaigns to encourage moviegoers to catch Abang Adik in cinemas.

"Thanks to your support, the movie has achieved a fantastic collection to close 2023 and mark the start of the new year," said Ong, urging netizens to continue supporting his film.

National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Kamil Othman described Abang Adik as one of the country's best films and described it as a realistic Malaysian story.

"Abang Adik truly reflects the realities of Malaysian life," he said. Last April, Abang Adik won three awards at the 25th Far East Film Festival held in Italy.

The film about two stateless brothers living in poverty in the heart of Kuala Lumpur stars Jack Tan and Wu Kang Ren.
