Veteran rock guitarist Haron Amat of Bumiputra Rockers (BPR) has died of leukaemia at the age of 55

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran rock guitarist Haron Amat of Bumiputra Rockers (BPR) has died of leukaemia. He was 55.

His daughter Hana Nafisah Haron said that her father died at 9am today in Ampang Hospital.

"My father didn't have any chronic illnesses, but over the last two months he suffered from high fevers and rashes," she told Berita Harian Online.

Hana added that when his health did not improve, Haron underwent a medical check-up at the hospital and doctors found that he had leukaemia.

Haron was hospitalised at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Ampang Hospital on March 3 and underwent several rounds of chemotherapy.

"He passed away peacefully surrounded by family members," she said.

Haron's remains were brought to Masjid Abu Ubaidah in Taman Sri Rampai, Setapak and he was buried at the Taman Selasih Islamic Cemetery in Gombak after Zohor prayers.

Haron who was born in Kulai, Johor is survived by a wife and four children.

BPR was formed in Johor Baru in 1985 by Norzaini Mohammad or Awang, Johari Mat Rozekhi (Joey), Abdul Rahim Zain (Yem Bai), Ibrahim Musa (Yem C) and Raja Zainal Abidin Raja Hasnan (Enal).

They released their debut album Selamat Pagi Malaysia in 1987.

Haron joined BPR in 1988 after Yem C left the band.

BPR's best known songs include Dari Sinar Mata, Ku Tanggung Cinta Dusta Yang Membara and Dendam Cinta Seusia Dunia.

Dari Sinar Mata was a finalist in Anugerah Juara Lagu 1990.
