KUALA LUMPUR: Funnyman Yassin Yahya, who participated in a tahlil ceremony for Datuk Sudirman Arshad yesterday, is honoured to have been part of that "historic moment" which occurs once in a lifetime.

In an Instagram post, Yassin, 44, said that he was delighted to be part of the ceremony co-organised by the nephew of Sudirman, Razman Azrai Zainuddin or Atai, the Sudirman Fan Club and his own entertainment company Yasstar Productions.

The ceremony took place at Restoran Puteri in Sungai Penchala, owned by Sudirman's friend, veteran lyricist Datuk Habsah Hassan.

"At last, I get to meet Atai and the family members of Sudirman. It was great having a hearty chat with him. I learnt lots of amazing stories about my idol," said Yassin.

Yassin added that he hoped to attend every tahlil ceremony to mark the anniversary of Sudirman's death on Feb 22.

"What's special about this year's event is it's the only one with 22022022 (Feb 22, 2022) and it's 30 years since he left us. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment to honour my all-time favourite entertainer."

Yassin, who hails from Chow Kit where Sudirman entertained Malaysians in a live concert in 1986, began his showbiz career as a member of comedy troupe Senario in 2000.

He appeared in three films with Senario namely Senario Lagi (2000), Lagi-Lagi Senario (2001) and Senario XX (2005).

His other films include Abang Long Fadil, Man Laksa, Bujang Senang, Otai, Duyung and Kuliah Cinta.

In 2013, he participated in comedy challenge Maharaja Lawak Mega, teaming up with fellow comedians Shuk Sahar and Jihan Muse as SYJ.

Last year, he teamed up with another former Senario member Saiful Apek as SAYA in the eighth season of established singers' reality show Gegar Vaganza.

Sudirman, who died at 38 on Feb 22, 1992 was a phenomenal entertainer who stamped Malaysian music on the world map.

The University Malaya law graduate rocketed to fame after winning Bintang RTM in 1976, and his illustrious career lasted 16 years, during which he also became a composer, lyricist, actor, writer, cartoonist and entrepreneur.
