Local jewellery brand Habib is back to where it started, in Penang, but this time, it's not about a new store, but the ground breaking ceremony of Masjid Habib in Bandar Tanjong Pinang, recently.

Habib Group of Companies executive chairman Datuk Seri Meer Sadik Habib and his family held a ground-breaking ceremony for the development of the new mosque, which will serve several functions for the community aside from religious activities.

The mosque is expected to be completed in 2024, spread across an area of 8,615 sqm.

The ceremony was officiated by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, accompanied by deputy chief minister and State Islamic Religious Council head Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman.

Also present was Habib Group executive director Datin Sri Zarida Noordin.

Meer Sadiq said he recalled the family's wish to build a mosque in their hometown, Penang, as a way to give back to the community.

"We hope to see Masjid Habib not only as a place of worship but also as a location to bring communities together," he said.

The mosque will carry a unique design with artistic elements inspired by the Pulau Pinang community called Jawi Peranakan. One distinct feature is the unique rose-cut dome design inspired by the rose cut diamond, a tribute to the accessories worn by the Jawi Peranakan people.

Together with architecture firm Zon Design Rekabina Sdn Bhd, the project took almost two years of planning and conceptualisation.

The mosque is set to serve more than 1,500 people at any one time. Other amenities available at the mosque grounds for public use include classrooms, meeting rooms and a community hall for weddings and functions to accommodate the growing needs of the surrounding community.

A central courtyard garden and minarets with lanterns will add to the modern design.
