KUALA LUMPUR: Maxis has provided free WiFi at over 20 flood relief centres in five states in 2023, including Terengganu, in support of the authorities' efforts, providing connectivity to affected families and emergency personnel.

Maxis chief network officer Abdul Karim Fakir Ali said the telecommunication company is committed to facilitating emergency services and ensuring people stay connected with loved ones during critical times.

"In times of floods, reliable connectivity is crucial, and we are dedicated to ensuring essential connectivity for Malaysians through our nationwide network," he said in a statement today.

Maxis, in the same statement, reiterated its commitment to supporting flood-affected communities, emphasising a multi-pronged approach encompassing network infrastructure, response measures, and essential aid.

"Maxis' utmost priority is ensuring dependable mobile connectivity in flood-affected areas.

"In addition to equipping tower sites with standby power generators, the company has strategically positioned a supply of portable generators and critical equipment regionally, ready for rapid deployment to minimise disruptions and facilitate on-site restoration," read the statement.

Maxis has systematically identified high-risk network sites using historical flood data and elevated the platform or shelter height of over 60 sites nationwide to prevent submersion.

Maxis also enhances its network with a fleet of mobile communication vehicles, capable of being mobilised as mobile tower sites to strengthen connectivity in flood-affected areas.

"Maxis field response team has been equipped with boats and drones for use in affected areas, enabling quicker network restoration and response efforts.

"Flood response personnel, trained by the Royal Marine Police Academy on safety and rescue operations, are collaborating with Maxis. The company is also working with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) on an early warning notification process for customers in affected areas," read the statement.

Meanwhile, Maxis chief corporate affairs officer Mariam Bevi Batcha said in addition to network mitigation and flood response measures, the company is actively supporting relief and recovery efforts in impacted communities.

"Equally crucial during flood incidents is ensuring that affected communities can recover swiftly and to assist these communities, we provided food supplies and mobile SIM cards and top-ups to support their recovery," she said.

Maxis' efforts include distributing essential food supply boxes to 200 families at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Gual Periok temporary relief centre in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, and providing 1,500 SIM cards and mobile top-ups across the state.
